Well I’m back from my quick trip to New York for Fashion Week S/S15 and WOW! What a whirlwind! If you follow along on Instagram, you already got to see some of the action, but I’ll try to find my brain (which I’m fairly certain is still lost somewhere 30,000 feet up) long enough to write out a recap.
Let’s start from the beginning: I had no intentions of attending this year, due to trying to finish up school and transitioning jobs. The timing couldn’t have been worse! Then I received an email from Hallie a couple of weeks ago reminding me to RSVP for the #GlamFam dinner, and when I told my husband about it, he immediately convinced me to go. (Love you, babe!)
Now we’re about a week and a half pre-fashion week kick-off, and I have the mission of trying to find accommodations, before me. Quick google search for “New York Hotel” displays quotes ranging around $400-$500/night (eff that!), so I turn to airbnb which proves to be the better decision. The plan was to rent someone’s entire apartment, but I kept striking out on the nights I needed. Then, I had the crazy idea to “rent a room” from someone. This idea seemed most absurd to me, until I started browsing around and came across two super sweet sisters, with a totally cute apartment on the Upper West Side. #winning
When I arrived, I discovered there wasn’t an elevator, so I had to lug my 50 lb suitcase up 4 flights of stairs. I’m sure the neighbors loved the repetitious THUD’s I made, step by step, as I climbed those babies. (You’re welcome!) Side note – a 50lb suitcase is perfectly acceptable for a 48hr trip, right?! #FashionWeekProblems
After arrival, I start making my way over to Lincoln Center to see the action. Mind you, due to last minute planning on my part, I have no access to any of the shows, and no idea where to even begin. I walk over to the Apple store on Broadway, because of course I only brought i4 cables with me when I have an i5. (I swear, I always buy a new charger on vacations. You’d think I would learn, but I guess that’s not my style.) I’m in awe when I arrive to Lincoln Center. A couple of photogs snap my pic, and then I head off to explore the city. Remember, this is the FIRST time I’ve ever been to NYC! I head out for dinner at Salvation Taco (Roasted Curried Cauliflower Tacos), and finish the night off with my NYC roomie (and new friend) having drinks at the Husdon Hotel.
Monday morning, I start with coffee and breakfast at Aroma before getting ready for a show. I ended up obtaining access to ADEAM through a friend of a friend. While standing in line for the show, I was pulled aside by a street photographer asking if they could take my picture. (Closet Remixing + Blazer Cape for the win!) The ADEAM show was my first show ever, so needless to say, I was doing a happy dance on the inside while keeping it cool on the out. After the show I head to Lincoln Center, and Rick Lugo of Lugo Image Studios was sweet enough to snap some photos and even sent them to me.
I headed back to the apartment to get ready for the Glam dinner, and wore this perfect little lovers + friends dress. The dinner was held at Beautique, which was absolutely gorgeous! I ended up being seated with the lovely Sarah Scoop, which was pretty funny because we had just followed each other on social media a couple of days before. We hit it off and finished the night off with rooftop drinks at 230 Fifth. She even helped me get into Lincoln Center for the Pamella Roland show the next day. (Thank you!) The entire Spring collection is just stunning, but my favorites are 21, 22, and of course 39.
I have to admit, I was so intimidated about going to New York at first, but I’m really glad that I went. I don’t personally know too many other bloggers, and some of these girls have such established friendships, and insane access to shows, that I definitely felt like a little fish is a really big pond. Not to mention, it was my first ever time to the city. I’m a fairly confident woman, but for whatever reason, that all felt quite daunting at the time.
Although I didn’t have nearly as much access as a lot of other girls, I dipped my toes in the water, and liked what I felt, so I’m cannonballing into that b*tch next year! Aside from that, I made some new friends, and experienced a memory that I will cherish forever. I’m looking forward to heading back next year, hopefully with more exciting fashion news to report, but hey…everyone’s gotta start somewhere, and I’m grateful to GLAM, Hallie and Sarah for their support this first go around.
Btw – check out this video recap from the Glam dinner.
Definitely a night for the books!
