A few of you may know that my mom experienced a health scare over the weekend. Long story short, she was internally bleeding and they took her by ambulance up to University of Colorado hospital in Aurora from her town about 2 hours away. She has an extremely complicated medical history, so any hospital visit is extremely serious and treated with the utmost care. (Which, this particular hospital always does an incredible job!)
Each time, it sends me on a roller coaster of emotions. My mom was told in 2009 that she would have til the end of the year to live. It’s 2016. 2016!!! Her life is a true testimony to God’s grace and His power to heal. She still lives with the conditions she was diagnosed with 7 years ago, and has added a few more along the way, but each time we have a “scare” we are amazed at how faithful the Lord is to our prayers, and she always overcomes.
On the way up to the hospital on Saturday, my dad told me he was in pain. When I asked him if he needed me to drive he replied, “No, I’ll be fine. Just sometimes when I know your mom is in pain, I pray that God will give me some of her pain and I know He does. I know He listens. So I pray with expectation.” His words were so beautiful to me. They reminded me of the selfless love that exists in marriage. The kind of love that is best expressed through trials. It’s easy to love someone when they’re at their best, but when we’re at our worst…that is when the true test of love begins.

I’m truly blessed to say that Brandon has always been an amazing example of loving me at my worst – or at my family’s worst, like this past weekend. From day one he has been so supportive and encouraging to me during hard times. He will literally drop everything to make sure we are able to support my family. When we had been dating for just 5 months, he left a company retreat that was 3 hours away, to drive to Denver to be with me and my family during one of my mom’s hospital scares. He is so compassionate, supportive and loving, and constantly challenges me to be more of those qualities.
The thing about marriage, is that it’s important to find a partner you can enjoy life with. But it’s equally important to have a partner that will bring joy to your life even in the hard times. I guess that’s why they say, “In sickness and in health.”
I know this is a little out of the norm from the usual lightheartedness of my blog, but I thought they were thoughts worth sharing. Squeeze your hubbies a little extra tight today. They deserve it.
Keeping your mom in my thoughts and prayers
