Brandon and I recently had the opportunity to staycation at The Mining Exchange, here in downtown Colorado Springs. It was where we had our wedding reception, so it has always held a special place in our hearts. With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, we decided to make an early love day of it.
The reason we chose The Mining Exchange to host our wedding reception, is one of the reasons we still love it so much, today. The building has rich history, being built in 1902 as a stock exchange for the local mining companies. (For my history/finance buffs -it was actually one of the highest volume stock exchanges in the world.)
Brandon has always geeked out on finance history (finance was his major in college), and my first love is exposed brick, so this hotel suits both of our passions. There is plenty of exposed brick, steel art deco accents, granite, and even 17 original steel safes throughout the building. The building sat vacant for many years, but was purchased in 2012, and the mission to create the Mining Exchange hotel, began. Today, the hotel boasts all the modern day amenities, which compliment its historic charm.
We started our staycation off like any proper married couple would…binge watching HGTV and taking a nap. (Let’s be honest, is there anyone whose fantasy does not involve Joanna Gaines remodeling your house?) I realize that may sound ridiculous to some of you, but to me…that’s the ideal makings of a staycation. There is something to be said about just getting out of your home, and staying at a nice hotel for the night. It really allows you to decompress, which was exactly what we needed.
Tips for a good staycation:
1. Good Food – a good staycation requires good room service. (duh!) And the ability to have beignets delivered to your room from 6am-11pm is a very big bonus! The hotel food is served up by its neighboring restaurant, Springs Orleans – which has the best cajun inspired fare. It’s one of my favorite restaurants in Colorado Springs, so having access to their menu at The Mining Exchange is a plus.
2. Location – I can’t say enough good things about downtown Colorado Springs, and staying at The Mining Exchange allows you to be walking distance to all the action. There are tons of great restaurants, coffee shops and bars all within a quick 5-10 walk, but if you would rather drive, Uber is just an app click away.
3. Accommodations – The hotel lounge area is unparalleled in terms of comfort. In fact, we often gather with friends there to take advantage of the cozy couches and relaxed atmosphere. During our stay, we got to experience the MX Spa at the hotel for the first time. The spa is located on the basement level of the hotel and the atmosphere provides such a relaxing escape. From cozy robes, free champagne, steam shower and saunas in both the men and womes locker rooms, this place has ALL THE THINGS!! We had the most amazing couple’s massages. (Like, so relaxing that I legit came home and slept 11 hours.)
The couples massage room is so romantic, and would make for the perfect surprise Valentine’s Day treat for your sig oth. There’s even a bath tub in the room, which you can book before your massage. #justsayin
Whether you are a local looking for a stress-free night away, or a visitor interested in staying in the heart of downtown, The Mining Exchange is the place to be!
