I think I promised you guys a dry shampoo review over 6 months ago, but a home reno and a trip to Italy later…here we are. Still, I tested out many dry shampoos throughout that time to find what I think to be the best dry shampoo.
I tried out 6 different dry shampoos (many of them by personal request from you) and here are my thoughts on how each product stacked up in terms of efficiency, smell, residue and use. These are ranked on my personal experience and personal preferences. So yeah…if I don’t like the way something smells…it’s getting a lower ranking. Period. But, read through each one because I give my thoughts of efficacy and if the smell doesn’t bother you, then I say go for it.
A couple of tips for applying dry shampoo:
1. Hold the product about 6 inches away from your head and spray the product directly on your roots.
2. Spray dry shampoo on your hair BEFORE you go to bed, so that it’s able to absorb the oils overnight before they form.
Now, here’s my review:
Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo 7/10 – SO many of you swear by this, which is what started this dry shampoo discussion over on Instagram, to begin with. Alas, I didn’t love it. I am a big “smells” person and if I don’t love the smell, I can’t get on board – no matter how well it works. Which, the product does work well…don’t get me wrong, but there were others that worked just as well/better and didn’t have an overpowering scent, therefore it gets 7/10 stars for me.
Aveda shampure dry shampoo 7/10 – The smell on this was great, and the product itself worked well, BUT it’s not an aerosol can, which made it hard to use. If you are looking for a clean and environmentally friendly dry shampoo, then I definitely recommend this, but for me…it wasn’t my favorite. I did feel like it left a little more residue than others I tried, but nothing you couldn’t blend into your hair with a little finger teasing.
Dry Bar Detox Dry Shampoo 6/10 – This used to be a go-to of mine but after trying it out again this time, I quickly remembered why I dropped it. The smell is SO intense. Like I walk around all day getting wafts of myself so strong it’s as though I just walked into a Dry Bar salon. No thank you. The product worked fine but wasn’t my favorite and there are much better products for the price (see below).
Batiste Dry Shampoo 7/10 – This is my drug store go-to if I need something in a pinch. It works well but typically has a lot of build-up. They also have tons of scents and options for blonde and brown hair. Overall a good bang for your buck though.
MoroccanOil Dry Shampoo 8/10 – My stylist recommended this to me as her go-to product and I could instantly see why. It’s a great product that works super well. The scent is pleasant and it definitely does the job, but I’m only giving it an 8/10 because of a few reasons. 1. I love that you can choose from blonde or brown color options, however, it still seemed to come out with a lot of white residue which I didn’t understand. 2. I really only felt like it lasted one day before I had to reapply dry shampoo all over again. That may be a good thing in overall hair health, since it’s not stripping all your oils though…
IGK First Class Charcoal Detox Dry Shampoo 10/10 – This definitely makes the top two of this list for me. I LOVED the smell, for one. It’s not overpowering at all. Secondly, it gives your hair some nice “grit” and texture and prolongs the time between washes more than most, as the charcoal actually cleans your hair versus masking the oil. The can will actually last you longer than most, because of this too. There’s a reason this is a highly rated product on Sephora. It’s 100% worth it. The ONLY concern/question I have about this one is wondering if the charcoal does damage to your hair. If anyone has any insight on this, and whether it’s a valid concern or not…let me know. I mean…all dry shampoo damages your hair but I’m wondering if this does more so…
Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo – 10/10 – Well…as it turns out, my favorite brand for dry texturing spray is also my favorite product for dry shampoo. This is SO good! The scent is perfect, it makes your blow out last for DAYS and it doesn’t leave ANY white residue. This is my new go-to dry shampoo for sure.
Have you tried any of the products above? Do you agree with my thoughts? Have any others you love? Let a girl know!
This is such a great guide dear. Thanks for the quick breakdown. I love dry shampoo, especially when traveling. They’re super convenient.
